Patchwork Quilt (Kaudi)

Quilt created in the style of Kaudi patchwork quilt,
a craft practiced by the nomadic tribes hailing from the Haliyal region of Karnataka, and the Gandali women from Kodihal, in north Karnataka.

Kaudi blankets are stitched together by hand from scraps of old clothes. The top layer is often made out of cotton and also poses as the design layer, while the middle layer is what decides the warmth of the blanket. The middle layer can be built further upon to increase the warmth provided by the blanket. The bottom layer is also cotton, often chosen in a complementary colour with the design. The process involves sewing patches of fabric together, basting them, and then finally doing the “sujhni”, that is, quilting, over the entire area. The edges of the fabric are then finished with buttonhole stitches, or with strips of fabric sewn around
the edges.
